This has been a culinary favorite in the orient for over 3000 years. Their lavender blooms also make them very pretty in the garden. Chives complement cheese, eggs and salads. Plant chives directly in the garden as early in spring as the soil can be worked. Seeds can also be planted as late as 2 months before the first fall frost. Although they thrive in any good garden loam, chives show a preference for slightly acid soil and need to be kept moist throughout the growing season.
